North Beach San Francisco: Dining, Shopping and nightlife

Home to Little Italy in San Francisco and an old stomping ground for Beat writers, North Beach blends Italian Heritage with Bay Area bohemianism. One of the city's most delicious and cultured destinations by day, it's also San Francisco's most electric playground at night. North Beach squeezes a mix of jazz bars, family-style Italian restaurants, dance clubs, boutique shops and gelato parlors in one walkable square mile. Check out the amazing views and art murals atop Telegraph Hill. Practice tai chi with the regulars at Washington Square, and be sure to try a savory crab cioppino, a North Beach original, at an Old World ristorante. Once the sun goes down, grab a cocktail at an inviting lounge or bar, then hit the dance floor at the city's hottest nightclubs.

  • Where is the best place to park?

Parking in North Beach, much like the rest of San Francisco, can be a challenge. Most residential street parking has a two-hour limit. However, there are six public parking lots in or near the North Beach neighborhood. Garages along the Embarcadero offer good locations near Pier 39 and Fishermans Wharf, but they can be expensive without validation. If you’re planning on staying for a while, it may be a better value to buy an all-day parking pass.
  • What italian restaurants are there?

As San Francisco's Little Italy, there is no shortage of Old World cafes and restaurants in North Beach. Serving authentic Sicilian- and Tuscan-styled cuisine, many of the area's Italian restaurants have been operating for decades. Try the veal scallopini at Original Joe's, a customer favorite for over 75 years, or enjoy Sicilian cuisine at Trattoria Pinocchio, voted Best of North Beach’s Top Pasta Restaurants by the San Francisco Chronicle.
